SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
Service Learning Project
A segment of this unit includes a day of service learning that will involve our classes taking a closer look at the topic of this ITU on survival: the skills, equipment, and abilities needed for survival. Service learning activities incorporate several themes: Investigation, Planning/Preparation, Action/Implementation, Reflection and Demonstration.
Investigation: Students, from both classes, will use the internet while investigating food products, liquids, shelter, physical/fitness attributes, etc. that one may need in order to survive.
Planning/Preparation: Mrs. Andrews' class will create a short informative video about survival BY utilizing the collaborative efforts of groups from both classes. The video will educate students, parents, and community members about preparation regarding skills and physical fitness attributes that one must have to survive natural disasters. The video will posted to YouTube to make the material available to the community at large. An example video made by a student can be seen here. In addition, Mrs. Adams' class will create posters that convey information regarding survival supplies & necessities in both Spanish and English in order to make the material accessible. The posters will also have pictures/illustrations for individuals of varying reading ability.
Action/implementation: At the end of the ITU, students will have the opportunity to present their video to students and parents. In conjunction with the video, students can present their posters, which will be placed around the campus to increase survival awareness among the school community.
Reflection: After completing the project, students will have the opportunity to participate in some reflective activities. This will include a full class discussion about what they have learned in terms of social justice, equity, and service to the community. Also, in accordance with the content area, students will write a short essay describing their experiences. The essay will include a section dedicated to their ideas for future service learning projects.
Demonstration: The final portion of the service learning activity, as well as the ITU as a whole, will be for the students to apply and demonstrate their knowledge BY going to SPE classes to present the video and posters to the students. After the presentation, they will be available to answer any questions the SPE students may have regarding survival and what they learned during the unit!
