ART:
Throughout this ITU there are several opportunities for students to engage in artistic endeavors. The main project in Spanish class that incorporates students' artistic skills is the Poster. While creating the Poster, each student will add/illustrate pictures relating to items that each group has chosen for survival. Each student will add their own personal artistic touch by coloring and labeling items in English and Spanish. In addition, each project will have detailed drawings of ways in which one can preserve and store each necessary survival item. The purpose of this assignment is to educate students and the community about survival preparedness in a format that is accessible to people of different languages and reading abilities.
The project will be introduced to the students the second day. By then the students will have the necessary information to start the poster. Students will have time to work on the project in class. By the end of the third class, students from Mrs. Adams class will go to Mrs. Andrews' class to exchange information so together they can start the short film project. Mrs. Andrews will oversee all of the students incorporating the art component into the project and she will be available to any and all answer questions.
In addition to the informative video, students from Mrs. Andrews Physical Education class will an opportunity to express their artistic side by creating group/team flags. The flags will be decorated with the group/team's name, and key terms relating to survival. The key terms will be accompanied by illustrations and labels in both English and Spanish.
TECHNOLOGY:
Student will learn how to use technology in various ways during the ITU on Survival. In Spanish and PE class, Mrs. Andrews and Mrs. Adams will tutor students about proper internet research techniques. This will include where to find suitable data for their project. Students will learn how to use Google Translate, and think critically about how to identify reputable sources.
For Social Justice, students will use a specific website to collect data about products that are "slavery free" http://www.productsofslavery.org/.
In addition, students from Mrs. Andrews and Mrs. Adams classes will collaborate to create a short educational movie to be viewed by parents and SE students. So, students will also learn how to produce and post video footage! An example of a student made video relating to Physical Education can be viewed here.
