Social Justice and Equity
After completing the ITU project, students will be able to inform the public on the importance of learning Survival strategies and concepts to better understand how to survive natural disaster. This knowledge will aid them in preparing for adverse situations, and equip them with the ability and skills to think critically. Students will learn how to help
themselves, as well as their neighbors (both English and Spanish speakers) by knowing what supplies and skills are needed to prepare for future disaster.
In addition, students will be able to learn more about their community by interacting with their neighbors during the project presentation. Students will learn how to engage with other students from different cultures during the short movie project sponsored by Mrs. Andrews and a group of her students. Both English and Spanish speakers will have the opportunity to present and describe ways to stay fit and prepared for survival. This will include information on various muscles of the body and congruent exercises to support those muscles. An example video made by a youth can be viewed here.
By interacting and participating in cooperative activities during this ITU, students will learn about and explore every human's right to survival - regardless of cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, or gender differences. This unique experience allows students to work together towards common goals, while learning about and appreciating one another.
During the ITU lessons in Spanish, students will be able to add to the information they learned in P.E by exploring survival information related to necessary supplies and their congruent key terms. The students will produce posters that contain illustrations of survival supplies accompanied by labels in both English and Spanish. While practicing collaborative efforts, students will learn that their opinions and individuality are important to the school and community. Students will think critically about how to work with their neighbors (both English and Spanish speaking) to approach unexpected events that require survival skills.
Students from both subjects areas will have the unique opportunity to learn about, and choose, "slave labor free" products when selecting the items and equipment needed to survive a natural disaster. This experience will help students to develop empathy for children who cannot afford education, and who are condemned to work from an early
age due to their economic status. To participate in this segment of the learning unit, students will visit http://www.productsofslavery.org/.
